As parents and their children begin to attend their immunization appointments in the city, Toronto Police will patrol nearby “over the next few days” for their safety.

“Interference and obstruction will not be tolerated,” according to a tweet from Toronto Police Operations. “Charges will be laid if warranted. “

Const. David Hopkinson said there had been no incidents to date, but Chief James Ramer decided it was the best way forward at this time.

“We had no problem,” Hopkinson said on Saturday.

“We are monitoring both locally and globally, speaking to other law enforcement and security agencies around the world, and to our country,” he explained. “And some concerns and complaints have come both from our community and from some social, bothersome and worrying sources regarding these vaccination sites. So, as a proactive measure, our leader asked the officers to be more careful. “

Hopkinson said there would be a bit more scrutiny and bigger patrols to make sure people are safe, but for how long he wasn’t sure.

“We know that Saturday in Toronto for the last couple of years has seen its fair share of (anti-vax) protests, so we know things usually heat up on the weekends,” Hopkinson said.

“I believe, like everything, that you have to measure it and that you have to see where it is going on a daily, weekly, even monthly basis,” he said. “If there doesn’t seem to be any significant issues coming up with this, then we’ll look into that and see if it’s necessary next week.”

“If there are more issues, or if there are still concerns in the community, then we need to listen to our community,” Hopkinson added.
