SeaState forecasts live on 26 Cermaq sites

Cermaq Canada is the first company to use the full suite of new forecasting tools in Scoot Science’s exclusive SaaS platform, SeaState.
Cermaq is also the first to activate the Scoot Integrated Welfare Index known as SIWI and engage Scoot in bespoke analytics projects that have helped refine the company’s standard operating procedures.
The world’s first ocean intelligence platform for aquaculture, SeaState is now operating at 26 Cermaq sites in Canada. Real-time temperature, salinity, and oxygen levels are integrated with publicly available data to produce forecasts with regional and site-specific ocean conditions. Multi-day forecasts of ocean conditions are updated four times a day to give aquaculture facilities the warnings needed to improve fish welfare, increase survivability, and operate more sustainably and profitably.
In addition to SeaState ocean forecasts, Cermaq uses SIWI, a first-of-its-kind index that quantifies the cumulative impact of human and environmental induced stressors on fish welfare. This additional layer of information helps farms take action and plan to mitigate real-time and predicted threats.
“SeaState has the power to change the way salmon farming at sea operates. Our tools increase the survivability, profitability and sustainability of salmon farms everywhere. We are collaborating with Cermaq to extend our set of ocean intelligence tools to their specific needs,” said co-founder and CEO Dr. Jonathan LaRiviere.
“We needed an innovative system that not only connects our variety of data streams, but also makes our data useful,” says Dr. Kathleen Frisch of Cermaq.
“Scoot Science’s work gives us a new level of understanding of how ocean conditions affect our salmon and our operations within the context of the local environment and our interactions with it. Now our team can easily anticipate and act quickly if a threat approaches, integrate new innovative hardware solutions into our existing infrastructure, mitigate impacts, and maximize the total value of our ocean monitoring efforts.
SeaState is hardware and system independent, integrating disparate data sources into a single unified platform. The platform’s flexible framework enables farms to adopt emerging sensor technologies and integrate these new solutions with systems that have been in place for years.
The fully unified dataset is the backbone of forecasting and analytics that give farms actionable insights to streamline operational decision-making and save fish.
