Opposition leader slams PM’s crime-fighting committee
Opposition leader Kamla Persad Bissessar is calling on Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to inform the country of the cost of his latest Cabinet retreat as well as what was learned from it.
Persad-Bissessar was speaking at UNC’s Monday night forum where she presented information she said arrived in her mailbox about what was actually discussed at last week’s retreat.
She said, “Several MPs tell me that’s what happened; 1) They doubled down on the defense of the Attorney General by the Prime Minister; 2) They pointed out that the 2023 budget is due and we are getting an election budget; 3) Big up for (Minister) Young for the work in the energy and investment sector and him in the service of T&T; 4) Discuss that the local government election is scheduled for soon.
Persad-Bissessar also noted that many discussions would also have surrounded the preparations and the gathering of resources for the election:
“Two day retreat… so when we think these guys are here for serious business, that’s what was going on. And I believe they did because when we listened to this press conference today (Monday), nothing came of it.
The Leader of the Opposition further criticized the Prime Minister’s announcement to declare serious and violent crime a public health emergency:
She said: “He came back with his rubbish on declaring the crime a public health emergency as a plan to tackle crime. He just copied a discussion topic from the internet and released it to the public. I don’t know if anyone told him that this is a 1979 concept that the CDC came up with in the United States.
She also criticized the Prime Minister’s motion to create a committee to deal with escalating crime problems, noting that solutions, not committees, are needed:
“It’s their big idea to stop the tide of violence in our country, copy and paste from the internet. People live in fear, people are shot, people are robbed, houses are broken into, women and children are killed. We need solutions now, not another committee to leave at sunset and we will never hear from them again.
