Milwaukee In-Person Early Voting Plan: Cafe, Barber Shop, Fiserv Forum
The city council must vote on 27 proposed locations.
Election officials in Milwaukee are offering a number of new in-person mail-in voting sites, including a coffee shop and hair salon, in an effort to reach new voters ahead of the August primaries and general election in ‘fall. “Not just increasing the number of sites, but where can we reach people who otherwise face barriers to voting,” Milwaukee Elections Commission Executive Director Claire Woodall-Vogg said Tuesday. A Common Council committee on Monday approved 27 proposed locations, one of which would include Gee’s Clippers, a popular hair salon in the city. Places like Gee’s, election officials said, can serve as pop-up sites with special events and not necessarily daily early voting locations. “We need to encourage people to get out there and use that power they have to vote,” said Richard Armstead, longtime barber at Gee’s. “Anything that would make it easier, I think is great.” Other locations offered include Coffee Makes You Black, Serb Hall, and Fiserv Forum. “It’s a bipartisan issue of making sure our community is informed about what’s going on, how do you vote, what do you vote for?” said Arvind Gopalratnam, vice president of corporate social responsibility for the Milwaukee Bucks. All 27 locations won’t necessarily be used, but election officials are preparing for the options and said all locations will meet any review or legal challenge. “We’ll notice them correctly, so there shouldn’t be any controversy surrounding the locations we’ve chosen,” Woodall-Vogg said. The full Common Council is expected to vote and approve the proposed locations next week.
