Milwaukee executives ‘rolled out the red carpet’ during RNC committee site visit
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Milwaukee did its best with the Republican National Convention nominating committee in town this week. The city is in the final three to host the 2024 convention.
VISIT Milwaukee hosted the committee for a site visit this week.
“It was a whirlwind trip and it went really well,” said Claire Koenig, director of communications for VISIT Milwaukee. “They loved it. You could see it in their faces.”
RNC organizers were able to hit the big three – hotels, venues and restaurants. City leaders say Milwaukee is the perfect host, and they’re quick to bring in nearly $200 million and 45,000 visitors.
With 24 hours to put on a big show, city leaders showcased everything Brew City has to offer.
“There was nothing not to like, in fact our partners – at venues, in hotels, in restaurants – went out of their way to accommodate them and made sure we really rolled out the red carpet for them. “, said Koenig.
The committee lunched and dined at the best establishments in Milwaukee, visited hotels and discovered the best venues in the city, such as the Riverside Theatre.
“I thought it was a really good behind-the-scenes insight into what Milwaukee is and what entertainment is in Milwaukee. I think they have a really good understanding of Milwaukee as a city – just like us as a place – are incredibly authentic and I think that’s what they’re going for,” said Gary Witt, CEO of Pabst Theater Group.
If the city wins the offer, the convention will be held at the Fiserv Forum and will use the entire Central District of Wisconsin. The expansion is expected to be completed in the spring of 2024. But there are still two more cities left in the mix.
“Right now the RNC has to decide whether to take the money and run, which is Salt Lake City or Nashville, or do it for political reasons, and that’s Milwaukee,” Mordecai Lee said, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Political pundits question whether Milwaukee has the facilities for a convention of this size, following the same questions at the 2020 Democratic National Convention.
But city leaders note that the RNC is smaller than the DNC and said they will have enough hotel rooms.
“We have about 20,000 in the Greater Milwaukee area. It works for them,” Koenig said.
VISIT Milwaukee executives said they had no news to report on the 2024 Democratic National Convention. The DNC did not send a request for proposal to the city.
