As anyone who canoe (or kayak) in Killarney Provincial Park will know, finding a preferred or convenient campsite is much more of a dice game than the obvious.

Sometimes it works, but more often than not you can paddle the entire shore of a lake – or even have to move on to the next – before reaching a site which is free and which will suffice.

Everything is changing now.

Starting November 29, Ontario Parks will be implementing a new site-specific booking model for all backcountry paddling campsites in Killarney.

“For reservations made within the five-month window for the 2022 season, you will be prompted to select a specific site for each night of your reservation,” the government agency said in a notice sent to previous visitors.

In the past, paddlers were asked to choose which area or lake they expected to stay each night, but they could not book individual, numbered campsites.

“Updating our reservation system to give visitors the option to choose their preferred backcountry site is one of the ways we listen to guest feedback and continually work to improve the visitor experience. Said Ontario Parks.

However, the change also means that every backcountry paddling site is given a new number, so your existing park map won’t work, unless you go to a table online and renumber them all. by hand.

Fortunately, new maps of the park will be available by spring, showing updated campsite numbers.

In the meantime, the details of the renumbering can be viewed on www.ontarioparks.com/park/killarney/camping to help you reserve your locations.

Reservations can be made online at the Ontario Parks reservation website at reservations.ontarioparks.com .
