Johnny Depp earned $650 million between 2003 and 2016 alone. He matched that unfathomable income with unfathomable expenses
In recent years, Johnny Depp’s personal life has made far more headlines than his film career. And that’s too bad. At this point in his life, the 58-year-old is set to take a victory lap into the golden years of what has been one of the most impressive and successful film careers of all time. A film career that has generated billions at the box office and unfathomable movie salaries in a relatively short period of time. Salaries that absolutely should have cemented Depp today as one of the richest actors of all time.
Don’t get me wrong, Johnny is extremely wealthy by any normal standards. According to our latest count, Johnny Depp’s net worth is still an extremely healthy $100 million. That’s enough to make him the richest person in most rooms he enters, but it’s not enough to make him on our list of the top 50 celebrities in the world today. Maybe not even in the top 100.
Johnny Depp’s current financial situation is particularly difficult to understand given that between 2013 and 2016 alone he won $650 million in salaries, backend points and endorsements. That’s $650 million over a single 13-year span of a career that dates back to the early 1980s. You could say that with a little luck and some savvy investment advice, Johnny Depp could approach or exceed billionaire status today. If true, he would be, by our count, one of the 14 famous billionaires who walk the earth.
We learned the $650 million figure from a 2017 lawsuit Johnny filed against his former CFOs.
At the time, Depp was suing the financial firm for “Gross mismanagement and, at times, outright fraud.Depp alleged the company cost him tens of millions of dollars, racked up more than $40 million in debt without his knowledge, failed to file his property taxes on time, made unauthorized loans and overpaid. for security and other services, among other charges.
The financiers counter-attacked. In this countersuit, in addition to learning the $650 million figure, we also learned some startling facts about Mr. Depp’s lifestyle.
In the end, Johnny Depp equated his unfathomable personal income with equally unfathomable personal expenses.
The lavish lifestyle of Johnny Depp
One of the finance company’s most outrageous claims was that Johnny’s lavish spending habits meant he sometimes didn’t have enough cash to cover his basic monthly expenses. “Basic” monthly expenses which averaged $2 million per month!
According to the legal documents, here is a quick list of some of Johnny’s alleged spending habits:
- $3.6 million per year to maintain a full-time staff of 40
- $30,000 per month on wine
- $150,000 per month for bodyguards
- $200,000 per month in private jet travel
Speaking of private jet travel and lavish spending, the lawsuit highlighted a December 2009 email exchange between Depp and his top financial adviser in which that adviser advised Depp to take cost-cutting measures like the use of commercial aircraft instead of private jets because by then his accounts would have been overdrawn by $4 million.
Here is Johnny’s actual email response:
“first of all thank you for treating me and getting me through. secondly, i’m doing my best for holiday spending, but there’s not much i can do, as i have to give my kids and family as good a christmas as possible, obviously within reason. but, regarding the aircraft situation, I don’t have many options at the moment. a commercial flight with paparazzi in tow would be a fucking nightmare of monumental proportions. what else can i do??? you want me to sell the same art ??? I’m going. you want me to sell something else??? sure what??? the boat will be chartered in the new year and sony will then charter it for the TOURIST filming in venice. other than that i have bikes, cars, possessions, books, paintings and some semblance of a soul, where would you like me to start???“
And here are some additional lifestyle expenses that have come to light in this lawsuit:
- Over the years, Johnny is said to have spent $75 million to acquire 14 homes around the world
- His real estate portfolio included a horse farm in Kentucky, a 45-acre French chateau and several islands in the Bahamas.
- At one point he owned 45 cars and several yachts
- $500,000 in total to maintain 12 storage facilities for its memorabilia collection
Luckily for Johnny, he continued to be able to command 8-figure salaries to run his machine even after he ran into serious financial trouble.
Along with earning $10-20 million per movie, roughly once a year, Johnny is also hoping to secure a $50 million payday from his ex-wife Amber Heard through a defamation lawsuit that began two years ago. weeks in a Virginia courtroom.
You may have heard that Johnny spoke on this case last week. For those who don’t know what’s going on, here’s a very short recap –
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard first met in 2009 on the set of “The Rum Diary.” At the time, he was still in a relationship with his longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. Johnny and Vanessa broke up in 2012. Johnny and Amber started dating and got engaged in 2014. They were married from 2015 to 2017. Amber legally filed for divorce in 2016, after being married for just 16 months. Amber was quick to claim that during those 16 months she was abused by Johnny. He eventually agreed to pay her a $7 million divorce settlement.
In April 2018, the British newspaper “The Sun” published a headline in which it referred to Johnny as “Wife Beater”. Johnny sued the newspaper for defamation. This trial began in 2020. Johnny ultimately lost but appealed.
In December 2018, Amber Heard wrote an op-ed in “The Washington Post” in which she discussed the treatment of women in domestic violence cases. According to Johnny’s lawyers, although she did not name Depp in the article, the implication that he physically assaulted her was clear. In 2019, Johnny filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard in Virginia, where the Post is published. This is the case that began on April 12.
