Galesburg City Leaders Host Community Forum on Cottage Hospital Closure
GALESBURG, Ill. (KWQC) – City of Galesburg leaders held a community forum Thursday night regarding the recent closure of Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Galesburg Mayor Peter Schwartzman moderated the question-and-answer style forum. The forum, held at the Lake Storey Pavillion, covered three topics:
– the financial challenges faced by former healthcare workers and Cottage patients
– mental health issues in the Galesburg community
– disruption of services and health records
Schwartzmann says the city was unaware of the issues at Cottage until recently.
“Myself as an elected official, a lot of these things that happened weren’t really on our radar. It’s a private business. It’s hands transferred. We have outside bodies to oversee it. They make changes, they don’t communicate with us. We drive by, the hospital works and people don’t complain about not receiving care or salaries. In some ways, we are as much in the dark as anyone about it,” Schwartzman said.
Cottage Hospital closed on January 8 and laid off almost all of its staff. Cottage received a termination notice from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, saying the hospital would no longer pay for patients after Cottage failed to meet several health and safety standards. The hospital then filed for bankruptcy.
