Durham Region Among Top Seven Communities of 2022: Intelligent Community Forum

Durham Region is celebrating its inclusion in the top seven global smart communities of 2022, according to the Smart Community Forum (ICF).
The ICF is a network of cities and countries working to find ways to solve social problems through information technology.
The 2022 list includes communities in Brazil, Taiwan, Vietnam and Australia.
Fredericton, New Brunswick is also on the list.
“The ICF’s Top Seven list recognizes the world’s leading municipalities that are successfully using digital innovations to improve the quality of life for their citizens,” the officials explained. “It’s about using modern technology and innovative thinking to improve economic competitiveness, engage citizens and increase connectivity to support smarter, healthier, more equitable and sustainable communities.”
ICF officials celebrated the expansion of the region’s fiber network into rural areas, technology training for the elderly and the self-driving bus pilot in Whitby.
“We have a vision for a smart and connected Durham,” said regional general manager Elaine Baxter-Trahair. “It’s about working collaboratively with local municipalities and community partners to focus on residents and businesses as we address our collective challenges in smart and connected ways. We are proud to be recognized on the world stage for our work to support smarter, healthier, more equitable and sustainable communities here in Durham.
Later in the year, an ICF summit will crown one of the top seven as Smart Community of the Year.
