Discovery Community Forum cleans up vacant Caltex garage on Anstruther Avenue

The ebbs and flows of commercial fortunes can have lasting impacts on communities.

Members of the Discovery Community Forum (DCF) regularly clean up the area around the shops along Anstruther Street and next on their to-do list was the vacant Caltex Garage on the corner of Melville Street. Assisted by Leandra van Wyk and her Leandra Estates team, as well as Pieter du Plessis of RE/MAX Masters, the DCF members trimmed the unsightly grass and bushes around the fence of the abandoned gas station.

The abandoned Caltex is one of two in the nearby suburb, the other located on Jan Smuts Avenue across from the Florida Park Tennis Club. The sites are still owned by Caltex, which is owned by fuel distributor Astron Energy, which is in turn a subsidiary of the multinational natural resources company, Glencore. Astron Energy representatives confirmed they were in the process of reopening the Discovery site pending the issuance of a retail license, while discussions were ongoing about the future of the Florida Park site.
