Community Forum to Highlight Opposition to Woodbridge Gas Plant

Local residents and environmentalists are planning a public forum to discuss plans to shut down a fractured gas-fired power plant in the Keasbey section of Woodbridge Township.
The event is hosted by Food & Water Watch, NAACP Perth Amboy Area Branch, NAACP Metuchen Edison Area Branch and a dozen other community organizations. Speakers will include Highland Park Council President Phil George, Raritan Riverkeeper Bill Schultz and Co-Chair of Physician Engagement at Cooper University Hospital Dr. Lisa Cerceo.
Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) proposed to build a new 630 megawatt gas-fired power plant in Keasbey, an already pollution-burdened community. The company already operates a 725 megawatt gas-fired plant at the Keasbey site on the Raritan River. If approved, the expansion plan would make the site one of the state’s largest sources of climate pollution. The new plant would emit hundreds of tons of toxic air pollutants, including carbon monoxide, ammonia, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds, sulfuric acid and lead, all of which will harm the health of residents of central Jersey.
