After opening an investigation in late 2020, the Women’s Shed Project found that the Coffs Harbor community wanted a safe, supportive and social space for women only.
The Coffs Harbor Lions Club has created a steering committee of experienced women to lead this project with the vision of building a great non-political and inclusive place where women of all backgrounds and ages come together to build friendships, gain new skills, problem solving and support. other women.
“The goal is to empower single, isolated, aging, disabled, disadvantaged, recovering from domestic violence and/or financially unstable women to become confident, empowered and in control of their lives…and have fun do it,” said Lexie Clark, president of the Coffs Harbor Lions Club.
“The shed we are building will be open seven days a week, because despair, loneliness and fear do not fade away on weekends.
“It will provide several rooms dedicated to the development of skills such as home, car and bicycle maintenance, personal safety and self-defense, etc.
“We will offer activities in arts and crafts, native language and dance, health and well-being, financial management and cooking.
“There will be a large, fully-equipped workshop where women will learn how to properly and safely use power and hand tools.
“The concept plans will also include a large commercial kitchen, a break room and spaces for women to connect to services and supports.”
The Club is now preparing to give concrete expression to the anecdotal support for this project by organizing the forum next Wednesday for people who work with women.
“We will present our vision and plans to attendees,” Lexie said.
“Their feedback, input and support are essential to the development of the project and the success of the women.”
The Forum will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday 11 May 2022 at the Cavanbah Centre, 191 Harbor Drive, Coffs Harbour.
